Mrs Dawn Karels and Ms Bulewa Nela of Wallacedene High School, Cape Town, visited their partner school in Co. Westmeath in February. The two teachers who were visiting Ireland for the first time were representing Wallacedene High School who have been partnered with Wilson’s Hospital Secondary School, Multyfarnham for the past 3 years. During the visit of the Wallacedene teachers the annual cross boarder trip for the TY’s at Wilsons took place which the Wallacedene teachers also attended in Derry.
The purpose of the trip is to highlight conflict resolution and peace processes which the South African teachers could relate first hand to which made for interesting discussions between the students, teachers and community leaders who they were engaging with including the Mayor of Derry Elisha McCallion. Aside from the Derry trip, the teachers engaged in school life at Wilson’s Hospital under the guise of the lead programme teacher at the school Mr. Michael Finnegan. The teachers partook in classroom and extra-curricular activities, embraced the cultural differences and similarities between their school lives and set out a programme plan for the continuation of their partnership between the two schools for a further two years. The visit was funded by Worldwise Global Schools who have supported the partnership between the two schools since its inception.
